City Construction Season Resumes April 7, 2025

The City of Portsmouth NH Department of Public Works (DPW) announces that several seasonal construction projects throughout the City are scheduled to resume on April 7, 2025, with additional work to follow. 

Projects include:

  • Islington Street Project – Construction resumes on Monday, April 7, 2025. An on-site, in-person Q&A session is planned in front of The Kitchen and Caffe Kilim (163-171 Islington Street) on Friday April 4, 2025, at 3 pm. Most of the utility work has been completed. However, underground infrastructure work is still needed at the Congress Street, Middle Street, Islington Street intersection, and several other areas. The balance of this year’s work will involve finishing the tree-planting, installing sidewalks, lighting, road paving and striping.   • Maplewood Avenue Bridge Project – The bridge is scheduled to be closed from April 7 through mid-June 2025 for the installation of water mains. Once that work is complete, one lane of the bridge will be open for inbound traffic. Crews will then construct sidewalks and install railings. Access for pedestrians and cyclists walking their bicycles will be maintained throughout the project. For more information, visit the project page.
  • Willard Avenue Project – Construction will resume Monday, April 7. Granese Construction will install drainage at the dead-end of Ash Street, followed by the installation of curbing, sidewalks, and final paving.   • African Burying Ground Memorial – Work to install a two-inch waterline and one-inch service connections under the sidewalk on the Court Street and Fleet Street corner adjacent to the Memorial starts the week of April 7. The sidewalk and curbing will then be rebuilt. The African Burying Ground Memorial Committee has reviewed these plans.
  • NH DOT I-95 Sound Barriers Project – Exit 7 Southbound onto I-95 from Market Street will be closed from mid-April to June 2025 for construction related to the soundwall barrier project. For more information visit the project page.
  • Bartlett Street Project – Work is anticipated to start later this spring on the final paving, roadway striping, installation of a raised crosswalk at Pine Street, the raised intersection at Thornton Street, and to touch up loam and re-seed. The Morning Street scope of work is currently on hold and will be reevaluated along with future phases in the Creek Neighborhood. During the week of March 31, 2025, Public Works Urban Forestry crews will plant new trees along the Bartlett Street corridor as part of the City’s annual planting program.   • Greenleaf Avenue Project – This project consists of constructing new sidewalks along the west side of Lafayette Road from South Street to Greenleaf Avenue and on Greenleaf Avenue from Lafayette Road to upper Hillside Drive.   • Sagamore Avenue Project – The work for utility pole transfers, curbing and final pavement is anticipated to occur this spring. In addition, a new sidewalk will be constructed along the NHDOT roadway of Sagamore Avenue from approximately 1171 Sagamore Avenue to Odiorne Point Road. For more information, visit the project page.
  • Union Street Project. MAC Construction will return in early May 2025 for the completion of catch basins and sidewalks. Final paving of Union Street (between State Street and Middle Street), Coffins Court, and the remaining driveways is anticipated in May. For more information, visit the project page.
  • Little Bay Road Water Main Project – This joint project with the Town of Newington involves the installation of an eight-inch ductile iron water main and the replacement of 25 water services and four hydrants. Upon completion, the road will be patched and prepared for final pavement by the Town of Newington. The project is scheduled to commence in April 2025 and be completed by mid-summer. A public information meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at 6 pm at the Newington Town Hall  (336 Nimble Hill Rd, Newington, NH 03801).
