Each appointment will begin on the hour. If you are more than 15 minutes late you will forfeit your appointment.

How do I make an appointment?
Please call our reference desk during open hours at (603) 766-1720 to make an appointment.
Walk up appointments will be made as the schedule allows, but it is best to call ahead.
How does computer access work?
When you have made an appointment for computer access, you will also be able to print, fax, and make copies if you wish. If you wish to use a scanner, or microfilm reader, please let us know when you make your appointment, and we will assign you to the correct computer.
Please try to bring change or small bills for the photo copier and print station. The reference desk is not able to provide change. The copier costs $.15 per page, and printing is $.10 for black and white, and $.25 per page for color.
May I use a library laptop?
No, the reference desk will not be loaning out laptops, or any other equipment like headphones, chargers, etc. Please remember to bring your own.
Can I stay longer if no one else has signed up?
Please speak with a member of staff when you have arrived and we will determine if this is possible, on a case-by-case basis.
Can I use the restroom?
Restrooms are cleaned once daily in the evening.
We suggest they be used only when absolutely necessary due to health safety concerns.
Please clean/disinfect the bathroom when you are finished, with materials provided.
Can I browse the shelves?
At this time, we are not allowing library visitors to browse books (or other library materials) on the shelves. We are quarantining all returns for at least 72 hours, and are not allowing the public to spend time in the library browsing and interacting with materials. All shelves will be closed to the public. We enthusiastically encourage patrons instead to place holds on items for curbside pickup.
What safety precautions is the library taking?
In concert with the city, the library has taken the following steps before offering these services:
- Completed a detailed cleaning of the library building
- Deep cleaned frequently used surfaces
- Obtained adequate stores of disinfectant and hand sanitizer, as well as protective gear for staff.
All staff will be wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing while in the building. Library staff will need to remain 6 feet away from users when providing computer assistance.
Computers and study carrels are offered a safe distance apart. All library users are required to wear a mask while in the building, and social distancing will be enforced.
Library users are required to clean the space they have used with the supplies on hand nearby before they leave. Library staff will also monitor shared spaces and clean all spaces between appointments.
All library services will be operated with the minimum number of library staff, to avoid opportunities for contact.
How long will you offer this service?
Until further notice. Since our service levels are determined based on a number of public health factors, we do not know when our services, or our hours, will change. Please check our website at cityofportsmouth.com/library for updates.
Rest assured that library and city staff are working on plans for the next phase of reopening, and we look forward to serving you further in the future!
