The City of Portsmouth offers consideration for a one time sewer adjustment to customers based on unusual water consumption at their property. As sewer charges are based on the water consumption, any adjustment approved would only be applied to the sewer portion of the customer's account. In order to be considered for a leak adjustment credit on your account, an application must be completed. Please review the following information and guidelines.
The full application can be found here.
The Portsmouth Water Division routinely monitors water quality parameters and performs water quality sampling and analysis as directed by the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act. Water sources are monitored for radioactive, biological, inorganic, volatile organic, or synthetic organic contaminants. A full list of the required sampling parameters can be found by clicking on the "New Hampshire sdwalist" link below. The Annual Water Quality Reports only require that water suppliers report those contaminants that were detected in the water.
The City’s water system operators and managers are continually monitoring the water system’s supply and demands to assure service is adequate. Supply updates are provided at least quarterly and posted here. Additional planning and projects to address needs are continually underway and are summarized in the updates as well.
The treatment process consists of a series of steps. First, source water is drawn from the Bellamy Reservoir. Prior to mixing, coagulation chemicals are added. The addition of these substances cause small particles to adhere to one another (called floc), making them easier to float to the surface in the Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system, where they are skimmed off and sent to a drying bed. The water is then filtered through layers of anthracite to remove smaller suspended particles and turbidity (which is a measure of the cloudiness of the water).
