Peirce Island Wastewater Facility
The Peirce Island WWTF is the larger of the City’s two treatment facilities and is located on Peirce Island. The treatment facility was originally constructed in 1965 and was designed to treat an average daily flow of 1.5 million gallons per day (MGD) of wastewater. The original treatment facility consisted of grit removal, primary clarifiers, and gas chlorination. The treatment facility was upgraded in 1993 with the addition of new larger primary clarifiers, primary effluent sand filtration, and dechlorination.

Fats, Oils and Grease
Fats, Oil and Grease – also called FOG in the wastewater business – can have negative impacts on wastewater collection and treatment systems. Most wastewater collection system blockages can be traced to FOG. Blockages in the wastewater collection system are serious, causing sewage spills, manhole overflows, or sewage backups in homes and businesses. Two types of FOG pollutants are common to wastewater systems.
